 Parades - Parade & Rally 2005
The AJEX National Commemoration and Rally
The day was cold, the wind bitter, the journey inconvenient, and the temptation to "Give it a miss this year" must have been very strong for the Ex-service community, who for the most part are in their late 70s or 80s.

It is to their credit that they put on warm clothes, gathered up hat and umbrella, fixed poppy in place and made the journey to Horse guards in London, to assemble on the afternoon of the 20th November 2005 to take part in a service to remember their co-religionists who served and gave their lives for the cause of democracy and freedom.

   Looking Forward
AJEX as the organising body, looked anxiously on, at the marchers assembling on the parade ground, and every year are surprised and encouraged at the numbers "On parade". On this the 60th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War, we are delighted that the salute was taken by our President Edmund de Rothschild "Mr Eddy" who will shortly be celebrating his 90th birthday.

To plan for the inevitable future AJEX has always encouraged participation in local commemorations in conjunction with the Royal British Legion and other ex-service organisations. We have also increased the numbers of our members who take part in the National service at Whitehall which occurs on the week before our event.

But this year when we can parade so effectively these thoughts are not foremost in our mind. We retain the almost unique position of having Whitehall closed to traffic for the duration of our event, which shows the regard in which our parade is held by the government.

At this time when radical groups do not wish to be part of British culture, and wish to alienate themselves from the life of the country in which they live, they should look at the lead given by the Jewish community, who have accepted all the responsibilities as well as the rewards of being integrated into this great British society.
