The AJEX National Commemoration and Rally
73rd Annual Remembrance Ceremony and Parade. Sunday 18th November 2007
The weather forecast promised high winds and rain for the 18th November, so it was with a certain amount of trepidation that the marchers gathered on Horse guards Parade to fulfil their commitment to honour the Jewish dead of two World Wars and many other battles.

In the event the cold winds arrived as forecast but the rain held off until the last marcher had boarded their transport home or to the rally at the nearby New Connaught Rooms.

What a good march it was. Enlivened by an influx of a large contribution of youth groups of excited youngsters, with all the ebullience that youth brings to any gathering. Macaabi,Scouts and Guides,Bnai Akiva, NETZAR among them and of course the JLGB who provided Standard bearers, Markers and their wonderful band, and who under the command of Neil Martin have become an integral part of the Parade.

The event was carried out with the degree of professionalism that we have grown to expect over the years, and if there was some small confusion at the muster at the beginning, it was certainly not noticed by the larger than usual crowd of spectators who witnessed the serried ranks of marchers who paraded down Whitehall accompanied by the RAF and JLGB bands.

The Youth groups who marched with us were a delight, and managed to lighten the solemnity of the occasion without losing any of its respect.

The service was conducted by the Chief Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks aided by Rabbi Harry Jacobi and Rev; Malcolm Weisman. The reviewing Officer Air Marshall Ian MacFadyen, was impressed with the quality and competence of the Parade and spoke glowing of it in his address later at the Connaught Rooms Rally.

This annual Parade which defies logic in its longevity is still one of British Jewry’s most public manifestations of the important part that is played in the fabric of our country today. When so much space is devoted to the theme of divided loyalties by minorities, there can be no greater commitment to our country by the well integrated Jewish community who have fought and died for our Mother land for over 250 years, and who continue to do so.

Please note that pictures of the Parade will be posted on the website as soon as possible.

A special event at the Rally was the award of a gold star to the outgoing editor of the AJEX Journal. Gerald Smith, who was editor for over 30 years, has laid down his pen. We wish him well for the future.
