The FIRST operational deployment of a Jewish Chaplain since National Service // Wishing Padre Abel a SAFE and successful deployment on Operation TOSCA. Along with undertaking ceremonies and services, Padre Abel in his role will provide vital religious, pastoral and emotional support to those deployed. The first Jewish Chaplains in HM Armed Forces were appointed in 1892. Since then, dozens of military rabbis have served across the services and, during war, all the way up to the front line. It is a proud tradition that includes leading the spiritual and humanitarian responses to the camp liberations in 1945. Today, men and women like Padre Abel support religious ministration and welfare for those of all beliefs and none, throughout the army, Royal Navy and RAF.

This Sunday marks the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street, when Jewish residents and others in London’s East End came together against a march by the British Union of Fascists. “On this milestone anniversary, we remember the courage of the Jewish community and all those who stood alongside them in the face of fascism and antisemitism. The legacy of Cable Street still resonates today. It reminds us of the importance of standing up for our community, our neighbours and our right to live proudly as British Jews. For AJEX, remembrance is not only about looking back. It is about ensuring these stories continue to be told and that the contribution, service and resilience of British Jews remain part of our shared national story. Ninety years on, we continue to stand British. Jewish. Proud.” Fiona Palmer, Chief Executive, AJEX If you have not yet booked to march at the AJEX 2026 Remembrance Parade - link in bio to register. Ruth Brook Klauber Z”L 1924-2026 💜 “A life lived not just to its full length, but across its endlessly expansive breadth. Ruth applied an unparalleled dedication to public service, while demonstrating a typical modesty, and inspiring sharpness of mind. She was yet another of the likes we shall not see again.” - @d4nf0x Born Ruth Bendix, in Frankfurt, her family moved to Britain after Hitler came to power in 1933, settling in Highbury. In 1941, she volunteered for the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF). Rejecting roles as a cook or batwoman, Ruth opted to train as a flight mechanic and spent four years working on Lancaster, Blenheim and Wellington bombers. After the war she returned to her job in publishing but later retrained as a psychotherapist, working in both private practice and the NHS for 30 years. Like so many who served on the Home Front during WWII, especially women, she never claimed or received the medals she was entitled to. One of my proudest moments as Chair of AJEX was being able to finally present her last year with an original Defence and War Medal pair.

Today we remembered. We honoured. We stood together. At our Annual Service of Remembrance at Willesden Jewish Cemetery, AJEX paid tribute to the more than 120,000 Jewish servicemen and women who served in the British Armed Forces, with special remembrance for those with no known grave. This year, we also marked the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street and the 110th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, remembering the courage, sacrifice and resilience of those who came before us. From veterans to cadets, it was especially moving to see generations standing together, ensuring that the legacy of Jewish service and sacrifice lives on.
