This historic event will witness veterans and families of fallen veterans, march side by side with pride, wearing their awarded medals. Together at this special event, AJEX will honour and remember their service.
This year is especially poignant as it marks the 100th anniversary of the first wreath laying by Jewish Veterans at The Cenotaph. In 1921 at the third ever National Remembrance Parade a group of Jewish ex-soldiers, from the Judeans (the 38,39, and 40 battalions of the Royal Fusiliers), laid the first Star of David wreath. AJEX will honour and remember the thousands of Jewish men and women who fought for our freedom since World War I.
AJEX Chief Executive, Fiona Palmer said: “No one could have imagined that last year we would not meet in person however under current Government guidelines we are delighted to be able to hold our annual event on Sunday to honour the men and women of our community who fought to protect our country and stood up against antisemitism. We are proud of their service, strength and resilience – which resonates after 18 months of the Covid Pandemic. Join us to spectate and wear your family members medal with pride if you are not marching”.
AJEX National Chairman, Mike Bluestone said: “We hope to see many spectators lining the streets of Whitehall supporting the marchers this weekend. The overwhelming support from all age groups will encourage and support our dedicated veterans in what will be a momentous march for the Jewish community. It is so important for spectators to attend this year’s parade as it not only signifies the support for our veterans but it also creates a huge amount of positive energy on such a significant return to the Cenotaph on this 100th anniversary year”.
The parade will be commanded by Mr Ron Shelley MBE and supported by Lt Col Simon Soskin as his second in command. The AJEX National Chairman, Mike Bluestone will host The Reviewing Officer, Col Sir Lloyd Dorfman CBE.
AJEX is passionate about handing the baton of Remembrance to the next generation and those of all ages are welcome to spectate at this Jewish Remembrance Parade and Service. JLGB and the JFS Combined Cadet Force will be taking on key roles at this year’s event along with contingents from other schools and youth groups.
No tickets are required to be a spectator from outside the secure area at the Ceremony.
In the lead up to Sunday, AJEX are also encouraging all communities to take time to honour and remember over Shabbat by raising a L’chaim in honour of all those who served.
