It's Never Too Late: Veteran Celebrates Bar Mitzvah at 86

Tuesday 12th May 2026

An 86-year-old British Army veteran who was unable to celebrate a Bar Mitzvah in his youth has finally marked the milestone at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, surrounded by friends, fellow veterans and members of the Jewish community.

Barrie Davey, a longstanding AJEX member and Chelsea Pensioner, was not raised within the Jewish faith and only reconnected with his Jewish heritage later in life. The ceremony represented an important and deeply personal moment, allowing him to celebrate a significant Jewish milestone for the first time.

Joined by friends, supporters and members of the Jewish community, he celebrated the occasion at an event organised through a collaboration between AJEX, Boys Club House at the Royal Hospital Chelsea.

The service was led by Rabbi Nir Nadav, a chaplain with the British Army's Royal Logistics Corps. Reflecting the collaborative spirit of the occasion, members of Boys Club House were honoured with aliyot during the ceremony, while representatives from AJEX took part by reading prayers. Their participation helped create a meaningful and inclusive celebration, bringing together veterans, community organisations and friends on this special day.

AJEX, the charity supporting Jewish veterans and serving personnel, worked alongside Boys Club House to help make the celebration possible.

Reflecting on the day, Barrie said he felt "overwhelmed and grateful, It means a great deal to me and is something I will never forget," he said.

Fiona Palmer, Chief Executive of AJEX, said: "Being at Barrie's Bar Mitzvah today, at such a special and iconic place, was incredibly emotional. It was a unique occasion. Seeing him called up to the Torah and hearing him speak about what being part of the Jewish people means to him was amazing. AJEX was delighted to be part of the team that helped make this happen. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard and created such a wonderful atmosphere. Mazel Tov, Barrie!"

Ari Leaman MBE, Chief Executive of The Boys Clubhouse added "It was a privilege to be part of such a special occasion and very thoughtful of Barrie to invite some of the boys that he had met a few month earlier to take part of his celebration".

Those wishing to hear more of Barrie's remarkable story can listen to his two-part interview on AJEX's podcast series, For Honour's Sake. In the episodes, he reflects on his wartime childhood, military service, later-life reconnection with his Jewish heritage and his experiences as a Chelsea Pensioner.

AJEX's For Honour's Sake podcast series shares the stories of Jewish servicemen and women, veterans and members of the Armed Forces community through first-hand interviews and personal testimony. Listeners can watch and listen to the series on YouTube, Spotify and Apple Podcasts:
